North Vietnam Plan: Hanoi, Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh
1 October 2026 · 3 min read
A practical northern loop covering the capital, the famous limestone bay and the river landscapes of Ninh Binh.
Northern Vietnam packs an impressive variety into a small area. Hanoi offers old streets, lakes and a food scene admired around the world. A few hours east, Ha Long Bay presents thousands of limestone islands rising from green water. To the south, Ninh Binh has rice fields, rivers and dramatic karst hills. These three places link neatly into a trip of about a week, and each calls for a different kind of hotel. This guide shows how to plan the route and choose where to sleep.
How many days you need
A comfortable plan uses about seven nights. Spend three nights in Hanoi to see the city properly, one or two nights around Ha Long Bay or nearby Lan Ha Bay, and two nights in Ninh Binh. If you have less time, shorten Hanoi to two nights and visit one of the two landscapes only. Avoid trying to see everything in four days, because travel times add up. The roads between these places are manageable, but you will want to arrive with energy to enjoy each stop.
Start in Hanoi
Hanoi is an excellent place to begin, with an international airport and a huge range of hotels. The Old Quarter is lively and walkable, full of cafes, street food and small shops, though it can be noisy. The area around the lakes and the French Quarter is calmer, with wider streets and elegant buildings. Choose by temperament: stay in the Old Quarter for energy and in the quieter districts for rest. Allow time to wander slowly, try local dishes, and visit museums, temples and the lakeside paths.
Reaching Ha Long Bay
Ha Long Bay lies a few hours from Hanoi by road, and travellers choose between a day trip, an overnight cruise or a stay on land. An overnight cruise gives the most atmosphere, with time on the water at sunset and sunrise. A land hotel in the area allows more flexibility and may cost less. Many people also look at the quieter Lan Ha Bay, which has similar scenery with fewer boats. Whatever you choose, check the details of what is included, such as meals, activities and transfers, before you pay.
Weather and the bay
Weather influences the bay experience. Mist and cloud are common in some months, which can hide the views but also add mystery, while storms can lead to boat cancellations for safety. Check the typical conditions for your travel dates and keep a flexible schedule. Choose a cruise operator with strong recent reviews that mention safety, cleanliness and honest itineraries. Take layers, since it can feel cool on the water in the cooler months, and bring sun protection and motion sickness remedies if you are sensitive.
Settle into Ninh Binh
Ninh Binh is a gentler place, with a slower pace than Hanoi. Hotels and homestays range from simple rooms to peaceful villas among rice fields, and staying overnight lets you see the landscape in morning light, when it is at its best. Typical activities include rowing boat rides through caves, cycling between villages and climbing viewpoints for panoramas. Choose accommodation close to the sights you plan to visit, and ask about bicycle hire. The region is lovely at sunrise and quiet after dark.
Getting around the loop
Roads connect the three areas, and many travellers use private cars, shared shuttles or tours. Trains link Hanoi and Ninh Binh and are a comfortable, inexpensive alternative. Book transport ahead in busy periods and confirm pick-up points with each hotel. Allow generous travel time, since traffic around cities can be slow. When moving between places, avoid early check-out and late arrival on the same day, which leaves little time to enjoy anything. Ask hotels to arrange transfers if you prefer to avoid the hassle.
Booking tips for the loop
Book Hanoi first, then the cruise or bay stay, then Ninh Binh, keeping the order logical to avoid backtracking. Choose free cancellation where possible, as cruises and boat trips may be affected by weather. Carry a small bag for the cruise and leave the rest at your Hanoi hotel if you are returning there. Keep copies of confirmations, and save hotel names in Vietnamese for taxi drivers. With a sensible pace, the northern loop can be one of the most rewarding weeks you will spend in Asia.
